LAPYAHAN FESTIVAL IN SAN REMIGIO

SAN Remegio town of northern Cebu successfully celebrated its first ever Lapyahan Festival. The festival is named after its white sand beaches and for having the longest shoreline in Cebu Province.
Mayor Mariano Martinez said that this was not supposedly the original name of the festival but after undergoing a seminar on festival management they had chosen the name lapyahan, a Cebuano word meaning shoreline.“Malipayon ako kay ang napili-an nga panagalan sa atong festival, tukma gayud kaayo sa lungsod,” he said.Despite the fact that Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia was on a trip abroad, Mayor Martinez expressed thanks to the governor for her support to the town. For his part, Vice Mayor Herman Antonio Bascon, Tourism Council chairperson, was grateful that the town had finally had its festival. He promised to make sure that the next Lapyahan Festival will be grander and bigger.Four contingents took part in the competition, with Tribu Manginginhas of San Remegio District II reaping the first place for the ritual showdown and street dancing. They were also judged best in costume, best in musicality, best in choreography and their lead dancer as the festival queen.Winners received trophies and cash prices.
